Half Marathon Training Begins

  /
August 28, 2012

Well ladies and gents, the day has come.  I honestly didn’t think I’d actually be doing this.  When I signed up for the on April 1st, I thought I was just pulling an April Fools prank on myself.  I felt like David After Dentist.  β€œIs this real life?”

Yes, Nicole.  This is real life.

Training Plan

I will be following Hal Hidgon’s Novice 2 plan seen below.

Rest days will be on Mondays and Fridays and until Lululemon starts having community yoga on Sundays again, I’m going to switch my long runs from Saturday to Sunday.

Katera, my amazing friend who has run MANY races, told me that weight training was also super important for training.  I plan to do core and leg workouts 2x a week (one day during the week and one day on the weekend).

Day 2

My training technically began on Monday with a rest day, so today counts as Day 2.  I woke up this morning to torrential downpour this morning and almost talked myself out of going to the gym.  After tweeting about how early it was and the status of the weather, I drove over to the gym.  (My gym is literally a minute away.  I can see it from my house).

Today’s workout was 3 mi on the treadmill.

I’m not going to lie.  I hated today’s run.  I hopped off the treadmill more times than I can count.  Maybe 4x?  UGH.  After mile 1, my left shoulder started to burn.  I checked my posture in the mirror a few times and it seemed to be fine.  So, I’m not really sure what’s going on.  Last week during my outdoor runs, my shoulder started to burn too.  It’s a constant burning pain on my shoulder around to my back.  Any advice?

Tonight

After work tonight, I am going to the Blogger Preview Event for Fashion’s Night Out.  I attended the event in April and had a great time meeting local fashion bloggers.

I am by no means a fashion blogger, but I’m not going to turn down an invite to check out new fall clothes, drink champagne, and hang out with my blogging friend, Jessie from Trend Hungry.

The participating retailers we’ll be visiting tonight are Vera Bradley, Wolford, TUMI, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Aveda, Kate Spade and Tommy Bahama.  It’s going to be a blast!

Talk to me!

  • Are you training for any races for the fall?
  • Anyone know what’s going on with my shoulder/back?
  • Have you attended Fashion’s Night Out in the past?

I’m training for a 10 K right before Thanksgiving :)!!! So excited, hoping for a time of 50 minutes.

Never heard of those pains, but I use to get a pain in my collarbone, I started drinking more water and the pain went away.

Have never attended that before but it looks like fun πŸ™‚ Enjoy!!

That does sound fun, Chelsea! I definitely want to do a Turkey Trot this year.
I need to drink more water, ANYWAY… so maybe this is the cause.

agree with the above that you may have tension in your shoulder… try to relax it and drop your shoulders, you might have your arms raised too high.

Training plan looks good. Dont be afraid to work in additional rest days during the week if you feel fatigued.

I’ve tried stretching my back and shoulders beforehand, but it hasn’t seemed to work yet. I’ll try dropping my shoulders and keep you updated πŸ™‚

Fashion’s Night Out sounds like fun — can’t wait to read about it!

Good luck with your training!

This was just the blogger preview event, but FNO is next week!

Good luck with your training plan. I’m sure it’ll work perfect & you’ll rock the 1/2

I’m not really training, but I do have a 1/2 coming up in November πŸ™‚

Thanks Jessie! Which half are you running?

Theres a race here in Kuwait.

Oh that’s awesome! Have fun!

I’m getting into the part of my marathon training where I will soon be running longer distances than I have ever run (13.1 is my current record). I’m nervous and excited about that. Happy we’ll be running the same race (sorta ahaha) that weekend! I usually know no one at any of the races I do. πŸ™‚

It’s possibly tension. Icy Hot is always a go to for me, and hit your man up for a massage. πŸ˜‰

OOOOO icy hot. that’s a great idea. haven’t used that since my dancing days πŸ™‚

Yay for training for your half marathon!

I’ll be doing my second and third marathon in Sept/Oct then shorter distances for the rest of year.

Okay so here’s my advice on the burning sensation. You might be bunching your shoulders when you run. It tends to happen gradually so not really noticeable unless you’re running in front of mirror on the treadmill and looking real closely. Also check your upper body swing. Unless you’re sprinting you don’t need a lot of upper body movement. When you feel that burning sensation drop your arms so they are straight down for a few seconds. It will cause the shoulders to drop if they are bunched up. If you want to practice less mobility on the arms try resting the palm you hand on your belly while you run. It will immobilize the shoulder and should alleviate any discomfort. I tend to get burning in my right shoulder/neck area and it’s usually from bunching.

Hope that helps and good luck on your training.

Thanks for the advice. I’m probably doing something without even realizing it. UGH. Hate when something like this happens, because otherwise I’d be able to run forever!

I’m no runner so have no advice but I’m cheering you on from Austin!

My training began today too! I’m also following the Novice 2 running plan. πŸ™‚ Good luck with your training! Can’t wait to read how it goes!

I’m running my first half marathon next month (and following a Hal Higdon plan too!!) — training is going pretty well thus far. Best of luck with yours!! πŸ™‚ Can’t wait to hear more!

As for your shoulder – are you holding any tension in it? Your technique may be alright (so, you’re probably streamlined in the right way), but if you’re holding it too tight (in any of the muscles from your ear to your fingertips), it might be causing some tension pains … I had trouble with my shoulder while running in high school and that was the cause … Sincerely hope you figure it out!!
