Snacking on Happiness

  /
May 30, 2013

Last night after work, Bryan and I went to Plaza Azteca for happy hour with our friend Andy.  Andyโ€™s moving to NYC on Friday so we wanted to get a happy hour in beforehand.  Happy hours are always so amazing because you never know whatโ€™s going to come up in conversation.  During this happy hour, Andy brought up a concept he had recently learned and started applying to his life:

snackingonhappiness

There are a few concepts within this larger idea.

First, happiness is extremely objective.  What makes one person happy may or may not make another person feel the same way.  That being said, in order to find happiness you have to find meaning or purpose.  So if youโ€™re waking up everyday, going to a job you somewhat despise just so you can pay rent, have nice things and simply โ€˜get byโ€™, you probably donโ€™t have a meaning or purpose behind your actions.  When it gets down to it, youโ€™ll most likely see that itโ€™s not fulfilling.  The allure of having those nice things will probably fade when you realize in actuality you donโ€™t find meaning in that lifestyle.  Ask yourself, โ€œWhy am I doing what Iโ€™m doing?โ€  If youโ€™re answer is โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ or โ€œSo I can get by and pay bills,โ€ you have to also ask yourself, โ€œDo I find this purposeful or meaningful?โ€

The second concept is that once you do find meaning or purpose in whatever youโ€™re doing, you have to comprehend that not everything is going to be sugar and rainbows.  There are going to be hard times.  Times when you want to break down and quit.  But you probably wonโ€™t quit.  You want to know why?  Because what youโ€™re doing is giving you meaning and purpose in your life.  And because every once in a while youโ€™ll find true happiness.

The third concept is that since your meaningful life is going to be hard at times, you have to remember to snack on happiness.  When you do find that things are going well and you are truly happy, โ€˜snackโ€™ on it.  Take it all in.  Be proud of yourself, let people know how happy you are, reward yourself, and shine that happiness out to the world.  Make your happiness count.  Make sure that youโ€™re aware of those moments, because those are the moments that will keep you going when the going gets rough.

I know this post is a bit deep, but itโ€™s such a great way to look at life.  Iโ€™m definitely keep this idea in mind moving forward, and I hope you all do too.

So funny I just heard of meditation bits, and I think these two concepts go hand and hand! Just like putting one foot in front of the other, small bits of happiness can lead to great satisfaction!

So true, Alison. So happy to hear that you liked my post! Love getting new readers. Thanks for leaving a comment ๐Ÿ™‚

Haha. Love this concept of ‘snacking on happiness’. I think in regards to the second – while we have goals to obtain and expectations we want to reach, sometimes just being in the present moment and learning to be happy with what you have can help to pull you through when moments are not always sugar and rainbows. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Very true, Christine. Thanks for your comment! Are you a new reader?

I’ve never heard of the concept of “snacking on happiness” but have certainly asked myself some of these questions. Interesting way of looking at it!

Yeah me either, until my friend brought it up. Never know what types of things you’ll learn at happy hours ๐Ÿ™‚

What a great concept! Thanks for sharing!

No problem, Erin. ๐Ÿ™‚

I like the “snacking” on happiness aspect of this, it makes you think a little differently about life and how to appreciate every detail a little more!
ps,
I’m from the same area as you it seems because Plaza Azteca is my FAVORITE mexican restaurant! (I know that wasn’t the main point of your post, but I got excited!:)

Becca, I think they have Plaza Aztecas in a few places throughout the country so IDK if you’re in the same area as me..

Hmmm I’m thinking of the one near the Plymouth Meeting Mall!

I’ve never heard of this concept before, but it makes sense! To me it sounds like they’re trying to say, Make the best out of life and enjoy the little things ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m trying to just remember that everything isn’t always sugar and rainbows, and if you really want something and the sugar in rainbows in the end, I’ll have to stick it out with a few classes.

Exactly Chelsea! Got to make the best out of life. You only get one.

amen, sista!

๐Ÿ™‚ glad to be able to share the info!

interesting concept!
Ill never forget whining to my mom about BABYSITTING (I didnt wanna go :-)) and she said IF IT WERENT WORK THEYD CALL IT PLAY.
for some reason that CRYSTALLIZED for me I can make it PLAYISH and FUNISH but there wouldnt be all sugar and rainbows—and thats ok.
