how to stay healthy during cold and flu season

I’ve been feeling really crappy this past week or so. Last Friday I had a horrible migraine and all weekend I was battling a stomach bug. Now, I have a nasty cold. Will it ever end?! Tis the season. Although it’s been a rough few days, being sick has inspired me to write this post. If you want to learn 5 simple ways to stay healthy during cold & flu season, keep reading!

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY DURING COLD & FLU SEASON

1. Stay hydrated

This should go without saying, but stay hydrated! Water allows your body to rid itself of toxins. A few months ago, I wrote a post all about ways to drink more water. My favorite tip from that list is to invest in a water bottle that you love. I’m all about things that are aesthetically pleasing. If something is ugly, I won’t use it. I hate to say that, but it’s true. I love water bottles that are made from glass, because the water tastes so much better in them. My favorite at the moment is a peach colored one from bkr that my friends at Murad sent to me. I’ve been carrying it everywhere!

2. Make time for sleep

Sleep is important for our overall health, but especially key during cold and flu season. I like using the Sleep Cycle app every once in a while to track the quality of sleep I’m getting. The best part about this app is that it wakes you up while you are in your lightest sleep, and makes waking up in the morning so much easier.

3. Keep moving

Exercise is not only a great way to stay fit, but also ideal for boosting your mood and reducing stress and anxiety. It’s been months since I’ve been to the gym (eek!), but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been working out. I love taking walks with Pete, stretching while watching TV, and doing my favorite at-home yoga workouts. I want to get back to the gym ASAP, so I can get a good routine going for the winter. My favorite exercises include these quick but effective arm and leg workouts.

4. Wipe down all surfaces

I’m a Purrell and WetWipe queen. I have at least one in my purse at all times and always bring them with me while traveling. There’s bacteria lurking everywhere. Did you know that a cell phone can have 18 times more bacterials than the handle of a public restroom?! Use a WetWipe to clean off your cell phone at least once a week (preferably more). I also use WetWipes to clean off my computer mouse and keyboard at work. You’d be surprised to see how dirty these items can get!

5. Be prepared

If you do feel a cold coming on, the best thing is to be prepared. The last thing you’re going to want to do when you have a nasty head cold is running errands. I like to keep a “sick” basket on hand with everything I’ll need when I’m feeling under the weather. The basket includes tissues, cough drops, Berocca/Emergen-C, a heating pad, medication and essential oils (I like putting peppermint on my wrists to help open up clogged sinuses).

Hi Nicole! Amen to all of these tips! Same here — I work at the gym teaching classes, so I’m careful to ALWAYS wash my hands after touching equipment and people! Here’s to a healthy season for us all! 🙂

I like your last tip about keeping things onhand. Great idea! And, I love hand santizer. 👍
